'Line Up and Wait' to Replace 'Position and Hold'
Starting Oct. 1 at tower-controlled airports, we'll no longer be asked to "taxi into position and hold," but rather, controllers will invite us to "line up and wait."
Why? Though "position and hold" might seem intuitive to pilots who've been using the phrase for years, the FAA has recognized that for non-English speakers, the phrase holds some dangerous ambiguities. It's too easily confused with other directions such as "hold position" or "position at hold" (meaning stop at a designated runway hold-short line). Also, the phrase "line up and wait" is widely used throughout the world and conforms to International Civil Aviation Organization standard phraseology. Listen for the revised instructions, "line up and wait" beginning in October.
